Getting started with two-factor authentication (2FA)
We introduced two-factor authentication (2FA) to help keep your White Rose Education account safe and secure, particularly where you have access to pupil data. Setting it up is quick and easy! Once it's ready, you'll simply use a code from your chosen authenticator each time you log in.
Setting up your authenticator
Step 1: Choose the authenticator that works best for you
You can choose which authenticator you'd like to use, so it's worth thinking about what will be most convenient for you before getting started.
If you don't always have your phone handy during lessons, you might prefer an authenticator that you can also access from your laptop or desktop computer.
A handy tip before you scan!
If you scan the QR code using your device's camera, it may automatically open your device's default authenticator app. For example, on an iPhone or iPad, this may be the Passwords app.
Want to use a specific authenticator app? No problem! Just make sure you've downloaded your chosen app, then open it and scan the QR code directly from within that app. This will ensure your verification codes are saved in the authenticator you want to use.
Step 2: Scan the QR code or enter the setup code
Once you've chosen your authenticator, use it to scan the QR code displayed on the White Rose Education website. To access this, log into your account, select Account settings and click on the Security tab.
Prefer not to scan the QR code? No problem! If your device doesn't have a camera, or you'd like to use an authenticator on the same device as the White Rose Education website, simply copy the setup code below the QR code and paste it into your chosen authenticator's manual setup option.
Step 3: Enter your code
Your authenticator will generate a verification code. Simply enter this on the website to complete your setup.
Don't refresh the White Rose Education Account settings Security page before you have entered the code from your authenticator into the field next to the QR code.
That's it! You're ready to go.
Logging in next time
Once you've set up 2FA, logging in is straightforward:
- Enter your White Rose Education email address and password as usual.
- Open the authenticator you chose during setup.
- Enter the verification code shown in your authenticator.
Good to know: Your verification code won't arrive by email or text message. You'll find it in the authenticator you used during setup.
A little note about sharing accounts
We recommend that every teacher has their own White Rose Education account.
This is especially important with 2FA, as the verification codes are linked to the authenticator chosen during setup.
Having your own account means you can log in independently, without needing to ask a colleague for a code. Much easier for everyone!
Need a little help?
Here are some answers to some common questions
Where's my verification code?
Your code will be waiting in the authenticator you chose when setting up 2FA. It won't be sent by email or text.
I've got more than one authenticator. Which one should I use?
You'll need to use the one you originally linked to your White Rose Education account. It's worth checking each app if you're unsure.
What if I don't have my phone with me?
If you've chosen an authenticator that's also accessible on your laptop or desktop, you can use that instead. This is why it's worth choosing the option that works best for you when setting things up.
What if a colleague has already set up 2FA on an account we've been sharing?
The verification code will be available through the authenticator your colleague used. To make things easier going forward, we recommend setting up your own White Rose Education account.
I've changed phones, lost access to my authenticator or need to start again. What should I do?
